About: The e-Health Innovation Project (eHIP) at Suffolk University is holding a workshop on grantsmanship, team science*, and networking for researchers with interests in health information technology. The workshop features an expert panel as well as both structured and informal networking opportunities. It precedes the annual Connected Health Symposium of Partners Healthcare Center for Connected Health at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel and Towers. This year’s Connected Health Symposium theme is “Driving Quality Up and Costs Down: New Technologies for an Era of Accountability.”

Research focus: The research focus is applied research related to use of health information technology toward the combined aims of population health; consumer benefit; efficiency; and data privacy, security and integrity. Research toward these ends involves consideration of expertise from a variety of disciplines including medicine and public health, information technology, communication, business and law, for full exploration of scientific as well as legal and regulatory factors.

Expert Panel: The workshop will include presentations from a panel of experts on federal and private foundation funding and on the application of team science to interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. Confirmed panelists include:

  • Kamal Jethwani, MD, MPH, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School
  • Garry Welch, PhD, Baystate Medical Center, Tufts University School of Medicine
  • Diane Strong, PhD, School of Business, Worcester Polytechnic Institute

Networking: In addition to the Expert Panel, we will assemble tables of individual researchers who are looking to join scientifically composed research teams. Prior to the workshop, participants will take a short survey to identify their abilities, preferences and needs. Participants will also be encouraged to submit a Research Concept (one page maximum) for an early stage research project. We will use the results of the survey to compose the teams for a discussion of the Research Concepts. In addition, we will have networking.

The eHealth Innovation Project (eHIP) is a project of the Center for Innovation and Change Leadership at Suffolk University’s Sawyer Business School, in collaboration with Suffolk University Law School’s Health and Biomedical Law Concentration. The mission of eHIP includes promoting and supporting applied research in health information technology (IT), including—but not limited to—consumer use of health IT and patient-clinician communication. Our interests include related policy, management and business strategy issues. eHIP builds collaborations with healthcare providers, businesses, nonprofit organizations, government, experts, and others in academia.
